Pragmatic Play — studio cover

Pragmatic Play

The most widely distributed studio in the market. It ships several titles a month and has a recognisable house style: very high volatility slots built on tumbling reels and scatter pays.

Studio profile

The catalogue is organised into families, such as Gates, Bonanza, Dog House and Sugar Rush. Each family eventually gets a 1000 edition with a stretched multiplier ladder.

LicencesMGA (Malta), UKGC, Curacao and other jurisdictions

Documented catalogue

The licences listed above are the ones the studio itself declares publicly. A developer holding a licence says nothing about the operator distributing its games: those are two separate authorisations, and the regulation page explains how to check the second one.

The name on the licence is not the name on the game

Look for Pragmatic Play on the UK Gambling Commission's register and you may not find it. The licence covering this content is held by Arrise Solutions (Malta) Limited, the operations company behind the brand, active under account 46683 since 2017. Pragmatic Play is the brand; ARRISE is the services group that runs product development, technology and commercial operations behind it.

This is the single most useful thing to know before checking anything about this studio. A brand name and a licensed entity are different objects, and a register search that comes back empty usually means you searched the wrong one rather than that no licence exists.

Who owns it, as far as anyone can establish

Pragmatic Play is private. Its own material names a group of investors led by Veridian (Gibraltar) Limited, headed by co-founder and chief executive Julian Jarvis. Below Veridian the shareholder register is not published, and the company does not comment on it.

The registered base is Gibraltar, with operations spread across Malta, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, India, the Philippines and elsewhere. Our sheet previously gave Sliema, Malta as the headquarters, which describes a large operating office rather than the registered seat; it now reads Gibraltar.

Sources also disagree on when Jarvis became chief executive — some say 2016, others 2020. We have not found a primary source that settles it, so the sheet carries neither.

The TopGame question

Pragmatic Play was created in 2015 out of the assets of TopGame Technology, a supplier active from 2007 that served largely unregulated markets and accumulated player complaints about slow withdrawals and casino terms. Part of the portfolio was acquired; the rest was built new.

Whether that was a genuine reset or a rebrand is argued in the trade press rather than settled. The argument against a clean break rests on personnel: David Barzilay, a founder and partner of IBID Group, which held the business, had previously been business development director at TopGame. The company does not discuss ownership continuity publicly.

What can be checked is the decade since. The modern entity has operated under UKGC licence since 2017 without enforcement action on the public record, holds approvals in more than forty jurisdictions, and its games are certified by independent laboratories. Both halves of that picture are true at once, and a reference index should carry both rather than either.

Volume as a strategy, and what it costs the player

Pragmatic Play releases at a rate of roughly two titles a week. The catalogue is organised into families — Gates, Bonanza, Dog House, Sugar Rush — and each family eventually gets a 1000 edition with a stretched multiplier ceiling.

Follow the figures across those editions and the pattern is consistent. Gates of Olympus 1000 publishes the same 96.50% as the original. Sweet Bonanza 1000 publishes 96.53% against 96.51%. Sugar Rush 1000 publishes 96.53% against 96.50%. Returns move by hundredths; ceilings move by multiples. The sequels sell variance, and the naming convention describes the multiplier rather than anything about value.

Configurable RTP is the studio's own policy

Pragmatic Play publishes RTP and hit frequency in every paytable, which is more than several competitors do. It also supplies titles in multiple certified maths versions, and the operator chooses which one to integrate. Both things are true, and the second is why the first matters so much.

The studio does not publish the full ladder of configurations per game. Databases quote specific reduced values — typically one to two points below the headline — but those figures generally trace back to other listings rather than to Pragmatic Play, and we do not republish them as fact. On the individual sheets here we say the same thing each time: the panel inside the game is the only figure that applies to your session.

Feature availability varies the same way. Bonus buys and ante bets are disabled in several markets, including Great Britain, regardless of what a review page shows. That is a property of your operator's licence rather than of the game.

Questions people actually ask about this studio

Who owns Pragmatic Play? A private investor group led by Veridian (Gibraltar) Limited, headed by CEO Julian Jarvis. The register below that is not public.

Is Pragmatic Play licensed in the UK? Yes, through Arrise Solutions (Malta) Limited, which is the entity to search for on the UKGC register.

Is Pragmatic Play the same company as TopGame? It was built in 2015 on TopGame's assets and shared at least one senior figure through the ownership structure. Whether that makes it the same business is disputed and not something we can resolve.

Why do the same games have different RTPs at different casinos? Because the studio certifies several maths versions and the operator picks one. Read the panel.
